this is a story in progress. i'll post it in parts as i go along.
1
It was dark. We landed at O200 hours. We had been waiting for fifteen minutes. It was all clear; there was no one near.
I signalled for the team to fall into line. We slowly inched our way forward. I had my rifle in my hands. I looked through the night vision scope but saw nothing.
We approached the corner of a building. I had my back against it and signalled for two men to come forward. One man crouched behind an abandoned car, the other followed up carrying the mortar. I leaned over and peeked around the corner. I could see a patrol team.
I spoke quietly into the com-unit and ordered the remaining twelve troops to come forward. They dispersed across the street staying low to ensure they were not seen.
I tossed an H. cube over to the other side of the street. Holo technology was one of our only advantages over the rebels. The holographic projection cubes reflected exactly what we were doing, but at the location of the cube.
It was exactly the diversion we needed. The rebel scum opened fire at the holographic images on the other side of the street. I shouted to advance then my men and I turned the corner and hit them with everything we had. I opened fire with my six-barrel assault rifle. We ran forward, taking whatever cover we could find. In all the chaos the rebels started retreating.
We gunned them down until not one was left standing. We felt proud - not a single casualty on our side.
As I walked up cautiously I saw a body lying face down. I kicked it over and saw her eyes staring up, as if into the black star-less skies. She couldn’t have been more than twelve years old. I looked around at the bodies - bodies not of rebel soldiers, mad with bloodlust, but those of women, children - innocent lives!
I was shocked; had everything we'd been told a lie? I was crushed - everything I believed, everything we stood for was a lie! A Goddamn lie!
