Went last night to see Supernova at Fox Theatre in Detroit. Overall, there were some goods and some bads.
When I arrived around 7:45, Toby's band had just started their set. Just another modern rock band with little to no talent that gets by on the singer's good looks and by having each member dress like whatever band is selling records at the time. His voice has no personality and just sounds like countless other singers of the day. Don't get me wrong here...I'm a firm beliver that you don't have to have the greatest singing voice to be a front man (look at Mick Jagger, David Johansen, Axl Rose, or even Gilby Clarke), but at least have some personality. Plus, he looked lost on stage to me. He played a few covers and a few originals.
Then Dilana and Magni came out and did an acoustic set of about 3 covers and 3 originals. Both their voices sounded pretty good. Magni only sang lead on 1 song, so he wasn't really being put in the spotlight that much. Wasn't overly impressed by them, but it was a better set than Toby's.
After their set I was under the impression that Panic Channel was up next. Well I must be out of the loop because up next was Supernova. I was a little bummed because even though I haven't really listened to Panic Channel's stuff, I was interested to see Steve Perkins and Dave Navarro (even though he's a total dipshit) simply because they're both good musicians and were half of Jane's Addiction.
Supernova came out to lots of empty seats and opened with "Let's Spend The Night Together" from the Stones. From the record they played "Leave The Lights On", "Be Yourself", "It's All Love", "Can't Bring Myself To Light This Fuse", "Underdog", "Headspin", and "Social Disgrace". They also played "Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley, "Bittersuite Symphony", that "spin me right round" song from the 80's, and in my opinion the highlight of the night "Suffragette City" by David Bowie with Gilby on lead vocals. And I'm not being biased when I say that. It honestly was one of the better sounding tunes of the night.
The sound was pretty good except for the fact that Tommy's drums were a little too loud (big surprise) and was totally drowning out Johnny Colt's bass playing. Gilby sounded great on guitar and backing vocals. My biggest problem with their set was that it only lasted 65 minutes (and there was a long pause in beteween each song). Paying $45 to go to a show that doesn't feature one of the bands that was supposed to be there and a short set from the headliner was pretty shitty. They should have either played a few more songs off the album (especially "Valentine") or at least maybe played a song or two from each guys career. Also, there was very little interaction between each band member. The band looked like exactly what they are...4 guys thrown together to do some shows due to cntract obligations. I highly doubt there will be another tour like Lucas clames or another album (especially with the way this one didn't take off like they expected).
In any case, I'm a Gilby junkie and will continue to support him with pretty much anything he does because he deserves it.
