HubMeg: Welcome to Hub Music's chat with Gilby Clarke, guitarist for Guns-n-Roses! Check out Gilby's new solo album, The Hangover. Hi Gilby!
Gilby Clrk: Hello, how's everyone doing! What are you all doing home on a Friday night?
Question: Are you married and have any kids?
Gilby Clrk: Yes, I'm married, my wife's name is Daniella, and I have a three-and-a-half year old daughter named Frankie.
HubMeg: Awww!
Question: What new projects do you have coming up in the future, and do you have plans to do anything new with GNR?
Gilby Clrk: I don't have any plans with GNR, but I produced a band called The Beat Angels album that just came out and my record that just came out.
HubMeg: You're chatting with Gilby Clarke. He has a new album -- The Hangover! And, of course, he played guitar for Guns-n-Roses.
Question: What is the most memorable thing about the Arise To Greatness that came with GNR, that sticks out in your head?
Gilby Clrk: First thing was the first live shows at Madison Square Garden in NYC. I'd only been in the band for a week and all my friends and my wife got to come to the show. I'd always dreamed about playing there.
Question: Was there something else you wanted to do besides being a musician?
Gilby Clrk: No.
Question: Gilby, first I would like to say that you are AWESOME!!!!! Love the music, but my question is, what is it like to be a member of one of the most influential bands in rock history? Guns has influenced me in so many ways. Love ya guys!!!!
Gilby Clrk: It's okay. Is that band that influential? I always liked the band, and I didn't look at it as being in a big band, but being in a band I liked. I tried not to pay attention to the hype.
Question: Gun's n Roses tended to write songs in which emotion was a key ingredient, whereas, some acts of today, such as Beck, seem to depend more on novelty and innovation. How important or necessary do you think emotional content is to good song writing?
Gilby Clrk: A song can only be measured as good if someone likes it. Everybody has different tastes, so that is the measure of if it's a good song. The Beatles can take the simplest words and melodies and make them mean so much, and to me that's a great song. It's all been crap since then!
Question: Do you know when the Hangover will be out in record stores?
Gilby Clrk: It's already out!
Question: Does your new CD title have anything to do with real life experiences?
Gilby Clrk: Of course it does. This record is the result of the last 5 years that I've been on the road. And this is my songs that came from that!
Question: Do you like sports, and if so, what sports, what teams?
Gilby Clrk: I like all sports. My baseball team, the Indians, is from Cleveland. And they are winning! I like hockey too, btw. The Kings and the Redwings are my favorite teams.
Question: Is it true G&R split because AXL thought he was a God and refused to cooperate with the rest of the band
Gilby Clrk: Yeah, that's true. Axel wanted to change the music and no one else wanted to do that unless it was to make the music better, and so one by one, we all left.
HubMeg: What kind of changes -- like the ballad thing?
Gilby Clrk: He wanted to go much more techno, and take things in a modern direction, as he explained it to me.
HubMeg: yikes! the horror!
Question: When doing a concert with GNR what is your best song to play?
Gilby Clrk: I like playing "Welcome to the Jungle" best because everyone screamed the loudest during that song.
HubMeg: Yes, screaming is good.
Question: Did you have an idol when you were smaller. If so, who was he/she?
Gilby Clrk: I've always liked John Lennon and Mark Bolin from Trex. They were my favorites.
HubMeg: Let's give some stuff away. I have a signed copy of Gilby's new album, The Hangover, for the fourth person who sends the Comment "Rock." WhenUWish won!!
Gilby Clrk: Congratulations WhenUWish! Good job!
Question: Would you like to ever be in another band with Slash, and are you still in Snakepit?
Gilby Clrk: I don't think Snakepit's together anymore. I just played with Slash and Matt at a Blues bar here in LA. I love playing with him and I'm sure we'll work together again at some point..
Question: Do you miss playing stadiums, or do you prefer clubs?
Gilby Clrk: I'd rather play in front of 80,000 people rather than 500. It's kind of hard to compare one to another.
Gilby Clrk: Hello, how's everyone doing! What are you all doing home on a Friday night?
