HubMeg: Chronicle asks this whopper:
Question: Guitar solos, or guitars period, don't seem to be as much a necessity in song writing lately. As a guitarist, why do you think this is? What role do you think guitar, especially soloing, will have in the future? Where will its niche be?
Gilby Clrk: There aren't as many solos any more because music is much more commercialized. Radio and MTV only want to play three minute songs, so there are only time for the solos. When everyone is bored of three minute pop songs the guitar solo will come back.
Question: What's your favorite bands?
Gilby Clrk: My favorite band right now are the Beat Angels. Of all time, my fav is the Beatles.
Question: I use to love the music biz, when bands made an album every year and toured the rest of it. You didn't have time to sit back and recollect or spend 4 months on the mix. Don't you think things were better back then?
Gilby Clrk: Yes. It was much more spontaneous and sometimes you'd get a bad album but you would get more music from the bands you like. That's what I grew up with but it's kind of obsolete at this point.
Gilby Clrk: Let's give away another CD! Or hey, who wants a vinyl?
HubMeg: I have a signed vinyl copy of Gilby Clarke's new album, The Hangover, for the fourth person who sends the comment "Roll." GoRacing8 won!! Congrats!
Gilby Clrk: Congratulations GoRacing8!
Question: After you memorize the material what techniques did you use to conquer black outs or stage fright?
Gilby Clrk: I don't have stage fright!
Question: Again, BB Queen, of Mother's Finest asks: Was there really a fight between Axl and the guys from Living Colour during the Stones tour?
HubMeg: gossip!!!!
Gilby Clrk: I don't remember. I really don't! I must have had a blackout!
HubMeg: yeah right!
Question: Would you join GNR if you knew it was going to end the way it did?
Gilby Clrk: Oh absolutely, because I figured it would have ended a lot quicker. I didn't think we would make it through the long tour.
Question: Gilby, being in a band myself can you give any advice on what to do and not to do band-wise.
HubMeg: Don't not know how to play your instruments.
Gilby Clrk: If you're in a band, be talented first, and then learn about publishing, law, and the record business because it's more important than the talent! I don't want to sound bitter, but that's just the way it is!
HubMeg: That's harsh but true. Warlock0 asks:
Question: What do you think of MTV?
Gilby Clrk: I think it's a great idea that got out of control. I just don't really like a lot of the music these days, but eight years ago I liked a lot of the music that they were playing.
Question: What do you think about the lack of guitar heroes in recent years. There are no Eddie Van Halens or Stevie Vai's emerging anymore?
Gilby Clrk: I think it's just a matter of what makes them heroes is that they are really good and nobody that good has come along. All in due time.
Question: Don't you think artists, like yourself, should go back to classical music to find inspiration? And don't you think that is the epitome of true music? Love some classical underlying in pieces of your music. Is this what you have done?
Gilby Clrk: If you have, it's been accidental. But I do go back to lots of old blues records. I use a bit of that, which is classic, not classical.
HubMeg: I like rock-n-roll, personally. Snake1490 asks
Question: What do you think of Marilyn Manson?!?
Gilby Clrk: I like that song Beautiful People. They remind of a modern day version of Alice Cooper, which I loved when that came out.
Question: What do you think of the new sounds that Rage Against The Machine is getting without all the keyboards and stuff?
Gilby Clrk: I personally don't like a lot of the modern techno angry music that is happening. I like a lot more bluesy soulful music. There is nothing wrong with the new music, it just gives me a headache sometimes.
Question: I own a studio in Atlanta, and was curious...did you enjoy being in the studio?
Gilby Clrk: Yes, I love being in the studio. I like being able to take time to experiment with traditional guitar and drum sounds. I really enjoy it.
Question: Who's your favorite Blues guitarist?
Gilby Clrk: B.B. King!
Question: What do you do in your free time that's outside of the music biz?
Gilby Clrk: I have a 1965 Harley Davidson chopper, and Peter Fonda and I take long rides.
Question: boxers or briefs?
Gilby Clrk: How about nothing! I don't ever wear underwear. It's not very rock'n'roll to wear underwear.
HubMeg: Yeah, rock'n'roll! Coma GNR asks:
