News in M.L.B from 3-25-03 to 3-30-03 Tonight at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN is opening night for M.L.B. The two teams are the Angels and Texas Rangers. Phillies acquire Magee from Indians. Jeff Weaver has won the three-way competition to be the New York Yankees' fifth starter. Mets coach Don Baylor diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He is still expected to remain with the team. Houston Astros put veteran starting pitcher Shane Reynolds on waivers . The Boston Red Sox have baseball's top average ticket price for the sixth straight year at $42.34, and the sport's overall average increased 2.8 percent to $18.69. Northern Virginia officials announced financing plans Saturday for a $400 million ballpark and five potential sites in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Three of the sites are near the Potomac River in Arlington. One is along Interstate 95 on what used to be the U.S. Army Engineer Proving Ground in Springfield and another is north of Dulles International Airport on the Loudoun County line. Brian Trubey of the architect HKS Inc. said the ballpark would incorporate elements of Virginia's architectural heritage, including a neo-Georgian brick facade with arched windows peering into the ballpark's concourse. Other elements would include a clock tower overlooking the home-plate entrance, retail shops, a youth ballpark beyond the outfield wall and 42,500 seats. Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore., are trying to lure the Montreal Expos. If the team is awarded to the Northern Virginia or the District of Columbia, it would play in RFK Stadium until a new ballpark is ready. Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed utilityman Terry Shumpert to a one-year contract. It's great to have M.L.B. back.

News in M.L.B from 3-31-03 to 4-6-03
Ken Griffey Jr. will be out for at least six weeks as he recovers from a dislocated right shoulder, the Cincinnati Reds' team doctor said Sunday. Griffey will try to rehabilitate the shoulder rather than have surgery, and optimistically could be playing again in six-to-10 weeks, Kremchek said. There is a possibility that he might have to have surgery anyway.
Derek Jeter expects another encouraging result Monday when he gets a second opinion on his dislocated left shoulder.
The Chicago White Sox are giving free admission to home games at U.S. Cellular Field for active members of the military. The team announced Saturday that military personnel can get tickets, if available, by showing a military ID at the ballpark. The White Sox said that tickets would not be available for the series against the Cubs on June 27-29.
Sosa became the 18th player in major league history to hit 500 home runs.
Baseball's average salary tops $2.5 million.
Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player in baseball history to reach 300 home runs.
Devil Rays announced the signing of free agent second baseman Damion Easley and righthander Alan Levine in two of five moves made by the club Wednesday.
The seven astronauts who died aboard space shuttle Columbia were honored by the Houston Astros before the team's opener Tuesday in a ceremony filled with tears and emotional songs. Children of Columbia's crew simultaneously threw first pitches before Houston's game against the Colorado Rockies at Minute Maid Park.
Giants' closer Robb Nen was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Former President George Bush threw the ceremonial first pitch a strike that left him delighted as the Cincinnati Reds dedicated their new ballpark Monday to a patriotic theme. The Reds invited current President Bush to open Great American Ball Park, but he declined without explanation, allowing his father to fill in.
While Baseball commissioner Bud Selig kept a low profile in Pete Rose's hometown Monday as the Cincinnati Reds officially opened a new ballpark that pays tribute to the hits king. Rose wasn't allowed to participate in the closing of Cinergy Field or the opening of Great American Ball Park because of his lifetime ban for gambling. Selig is highly unpopular in Cincinnati and stayed off the field for pregame festivities.
Baseball's opening night ratings increase on ESPN.

Did you hear Sosa's excuse. He's trying to get people to believe that it was a "practice" bat and he "made a mistake" using it in the real game. Oh, ppppppplease!!! They confiscated something like 72 or 76 of his bat's and the only one that had cork in it was his game bat. What's the odds of that....like 75 to 1

I don't by Sosa's excuse. I think he used the cork in his bat because he has not been hitting good at all since he came off the DL. He should have gotten more than 8 games also.

(quote) Bernie-mania hits Paul By DAVE GOLDINER DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
For Paul McCartney and Bernie Williams, all you need is glove.
The former Beatle's music company yesterday signed a deal with the strummin' Yankee slugger to market Williams' tunes for use in movies, television and other media.
"I was just blown away by his talent, " said McCartney, 60. "It's a home run."
Williams, 34, called it a "dream come true" to work with the former Fab Four member.
"I've always been a big Beatles fan," said the All-Star centerfielder, who is on the disabled list after undergoing knee surgery. "It's an honor to have one of the greatest songwriters in music history supporting my project."
Williams, who often plucks his guitar in the Bronx Bombers' clubhouse, attracted McCartney's attention when the Liverpudlian attended a game at Yankee Stadium in 1999.
McCartney heard about the soulful style of the gentle Yankee batting star but wondered if he had the talent to match the hype.
"I was intrigued to hear his music," said McCartney, who announced last month that his wife, Heather Mills, is pregnant.
No terms were announced for the deal between the Beatle and the Bomber.
Even before landing the deal, Williams was poised to jump from the cleanup spot to the Billboard charts.
The Puerto Rican-born Williams won a scholarship at age 12 to study classical guitar. He dreamed of a music career, but his talent on the diamond soon took over.
A lifetime .300 hitter, Williams is a four-time Gold Glove winner and five-time All-Star.
Williams has veered toward jazz and blues in recent years. He has jammed with Paul Simon and picked up some tips from Bruce Springsteen.
His debut CD, "The Journey Within," will come out next month on GRP Records and include big names in jazz, such as pianist David Benoit and Grammy winners Bela Fleck and Ruben Blades.
McCartney's MPL Communications controls the rights to his solo tunes along with the music of Buddy Holly, Jelly Roll Morton and Mel Torme, among others.
"Working with Paul McCartney...is a dream come true," Williams said. "It bring the whole album project full circle." (end quote)

Jason Giambi quote in August 2003 "SPIN" mag (quote) OBSESSIONJASON GIAMBI(New York Yankees first baseman; Manhattan nightlife connoisseur) "I've got tattoos all over my body. My sister's husband got me into it - he's tattooed up all the way. Now I've got some tribal symbols, a few skulls, there's a dragon on one of my arms - you might say I've got issues. It's incredibly addictive, and I plan on getting more. The designs I've picked have been drawn specifically for me, though, because once you get one, you're stuck with it for life - so you'd better pick something good." If the Yankees aren't in first place by the time you read this, somebody's in trouble.(end quote) Note to 'Spin' writer: The NY Yankees ARE in first place

Sheffield-Yankees deal finalized
Gary Sheffield already is bracing for it.
The first time he goes into a slump, he knows, New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will criticize him in the newspapers and on the airwaves.
"That's part of it. He already told me that's going to happen,'' Sheffield said Wednesday after finalizing his $39 million, three-year contract with the Yankees. I don't think he can say anything bad to me that I haven't said to myself,'' Sheffield said.
His deal, which includes $13.5 million in deferred money and a $13 million team option for 2007, took weeks to complete after the outfielder and Steinbrenner agreed to the basics. In the end, Sheffield dropped his demand to eliminate the deferred money.
He'll be the Yankees' new right fielder. That position was manned by several players last season for New York.
Sheffield, 35, hit .330 for the Atlanta Braves last season, with 39 homers and a career-high 132 RBIs. The seven-time All-Star broke into the majors in 1988 with the Milwaukee Brewers, and he also has played for the Padres, Marlins and Dodgers.
Yankees manager Joe Torre thinks that Boston's acquisitions of starter Curt Schilling and closer Keith Foulke have made the AL East a tossup. The Yankees have won the division for six straight seasons.
"They certainly have caught up, at the least, because of the pitching moves,'' Torre said.
